Sebastian Vettel drove a flawless race to storm to victory ahead of his team mate Mark Webber.  The duo completing their second 1-2 of the season marking the only races which Button has failed to win this season.

Jenson Button produced a spirited drive to storm past Vettel in lap 1 and went on to win the 2009 Turkish Grand Prix. The Briton was almost always in control of the race as the Red Bulls slowly faded away. Vettel looked strong until a switch in strategy saw him make an extra stop and losing out in the end to his team mate Mark Webber.

Jenson Button showed exquisite skill in both dry and wet weather conditions to take the win in the shortened Malaysian Grand Prix. Nick Heidfeld who had made a late call to stay out a little longer in his almost destroyed extreme wet weather tyres took second and an almost psychic Timo Glock who made the perfect calls on tyres came home third.

With rain looming overhead, all the teams started the race the race expecting the rain showers to start as early as the 5th lap of the race. But the rain gods had better plans, they keep the rain away until lap 22 which saw a huge surge of drivers rushing to the pits. Ferrari was the first team to switch Kimi Raikkonen onto the wet weather tyres but the call was made too early, the Finn suffered by losing almost 20s every lap from the 18th lap all thanks to a gamble that didnt pay off.

At the start, it was a brilliant Rosberg and Alonso who gained the most places at the head of the field. The Williams driver was leading the race into turn one and the double world champion slotted himself at third behind Trulli. Button, Barrichello and then Kimi managed to find a way past the slow and heavy Spaniard, but it took them the better part of 15 laps to achieve it. The action remained focused with the Renault driver as Webber and Alonso produced one the best sequences of overtaking maneuvers in their fight. The duo fought each other over multiple race corners, overtaking and losing the position.

But it was the rain that would have the last laugh. With the first appearance of rain, almost all the drivers opted for the extreme wets. The rain was consistent but not strong enough to help drivers on extreme wets. It was Glock and Toyota who gambled on the intermediate tyres and soon were on top of the time sheets. At one time Timo was as much as 10s a lap faster than the race leader Jenson Button.

On lap 29 most of the other drivers including race leader Jenson Button made the call to switch to inters. About two laps later the heavy rain started. The drivers again diving in for extreme wets. Timo Glock again the first to make the call and benefit the most. The Toyota driver was soon fighting for the lead.

As the rain came down heavily the safety car was called. Then on lap 33 the race was red flagged after the visibility was clearly close to nil. The drivers waited on the start finish straight for the restart which seemed impossible. FIA finally made the call to suspend the race.

With only 33 laps finished the race wasnt 75% finished and hence the finishing order were awarded half points. Something that hasnt happened in F1 in almost 18 years!

What a race. Amazing overtakings, loads of accidents and debut wins.
My thoughts:

Brawn GP create history by winning their debut race as a team with 1-2 standings. They were helped by some late accidents but both the cars ran an amazing race with Button leading from the start to finish.

Both the Ferraris did not finish the race and scored no points.

Rosberg had a pretty good race  but lost out due to problems in the final stage, losing positions quite rapidly.

Hamilton had a very good race coming 4th from the rear of the field, helped by the multitude of accidents

Sebastian Vettel had the worst luck when he was taken out Robert Kubica with 3 laps to go. Vettel was looking good for 2nd place. Hopefully his form is the sign of greater races to come.

The KERS system provided some additional interest to the races as evidenced by the Ferrari start and its excellent use by Alonso to keep faster cars from overtaking his.

Fernando Alonso won the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix in frantastic style after a brilliant move on strategy. Rosberg finished behind the Spaniard and Lewis crossed the line 3rd. Kimi Raikonnen’s crash with 5 laps to go gave Ferrari a point-less race as Massa finished 13th after a pit lane incident ruined his amazing first stint.

Starting 15th on the grid it looked like points would have been impossible for the Spaniard but deciding to go light in the first stint worked perfectly. Alonso gained 3 places by the second corner and overtook a heavy Trulli before pitting. Then in a twist of fate, Nelson Piquet crashed dramatically into the wall forcing the safety car out.

Kubica and Rosberg pitted while the pitlane was closed and came out ahead of the Double World Champion. Fisichella and Trulli added to the confusion by staying on track and remaining P3 and P2 respectively. Kubica and Rosberg were given 10s stop go penalty causing them to lose the coveted chance of winning the race. With Fisichella and Trulli pitting, Alonso was left with a clear track to show the real potential of the R28.

Lapping within .2s of the fastest lap(which again went to Kimi Raikkonnen) Alonso put an amazing 23s towards the end of the race. Then Sutil crashed his Force India at the entrance of the tunnel bringing out the Safety car. The restart was faster than the previous safety car and saw Alonso pull away at over 2s a lap. The win was just a formality after this. Flavio wiping a tear as Alonso picked his 20th Race win of his career and first since Italy 2007.

Massa and Lewis controlled the race from the start running away from the others in fantastic fashion. Kimi’s late response saw him catching up the front pair towards the end of stint one. The fateful safety car ruined the race of the top 3 drivers forcing them to pit. Massa was further effected by the being released too early from the pit lane causing him to pull away the fuel rig with him. By the time Ferrari recovered, Kimi and Massa had lost too much time.

Lewis is now 7 points clear of Massa as the F1 championship reaches its home stretch. This win gives Renault breathing space from Toyota and Alonso 11 point lead over Vettel in the driver championship.

Race Results

In one of the most fantastic races of the year, the formula 1 race at Nürburgring, Germany was a topsy turvy race. It all started in lap 3 when it started raining, nay, pouring cats and dogs. As a result, almost all cars (with the exception of rookie Winklehock who had changed to wet weather tyres ahead of the race start) were caught out and started slipping and sliding with 5 cars aquaplaning at the same spot and getting “beached” out on the gravel.

By lap 3, the situation was quite dangerous that the safety car had to be deployed. Further, by lap 4 the race was in such a disarray and the mass of slipping forced the stewards to red flag and suspend the race for about 10 minutes.Just before the safety car was out, Hamilton who was also beached on the gravel got a lucky helpful lift out of the gravel onto the track where he resumed the race a lap down to the leaders.

The race soon restarted behind the safety car with Kimi Raikkonen, who missed the entry to the pit lane after slipping out of the pit lane entry, being the biggest loser going down to seventh position and the rookie Winklehock leading the race in his debut grand prix. Winklehock was followed by Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso.

The race completely restarts on the 7th lap with Winklehock leading and quite a few drivers taking the opportunity to pit. Massa soon retook the lead with Alonso close behind him followed by Coulthard, Kovalainen and Kimi.

Hamilton who had just changed to dry weather tyres as the race restarted lost significant amount of time since the quickly drying track was not dry enough for the slicks on his car.

By lap 13, the track was dry enough to allow the drivers to switch to the slicks causing a traffic jam in the pit lane as most drivers trooped in to change tyres and take on fuel. In this middle stint, Hamilton drove a brilliant race passing multiple cars and setting 5 consecutive fastest laps matching the pace of Massa who was blazing away from Alonso and Kimi in 3rd.

On lap 36, disaster struck Kimi as his car slows down and finally drowns at the start of the pit lane due to possible mechanical failure.

With less than 12 laps to the end, the meteorologists predicted rain in 10 minutes which was slightly off because the rain came earlier. And by lap 52, it was starting to pour again on some parts of the track causing the drivers to make another bee-line into the pit lane.

The rain turned out to be a bad turn for Massa who seemed to have lost the edge he enjoyed in the middle stint with Alonso closing up right on his tail and overtaking him on lap 56 and then pulling away.

Alonso finally won the see sawing race followed by Felipe Massa and a brilliantly deserving Mark Webber taking the final podium position. Lewis Hamilton made a final lunge for the points but ran out of laps and had to settle for 9th.

This was a must watch race, one of the best in recent years.
