2007 Australian Grand Prix – Qualification – Kimi Alonso Front Row…
Mar 17th, 2007 by Haas
In what can be explained as a perfect start to the Formula One season, three drivers from three different teams took the top 3 qualification spots for the opening GP of the season. Everyone expected the Ferrari and Mc Laren to be competitive but possibly the most open season in ages threw up a few more surprises than expected…
Firstly Super Aguri’s amazing pace is simply shocking… Two thumbs up to a team which was last year unable to get past Q1, today saw its drivers qualify at 10th and 11th ahead of a Renault and a Ferrari(Massa could not set a time in Q2). BMW were quick as expected and split the Mc Larens with ease. Fisichella was impressive in the yellow Renault which almost seemed like a different team(not just by look) Heikki struggled with his Renault and was out in Q2.
Mark Webber gave the home crowd more than enough motivation to cheer as he qualified in 7th the best of the Red Bulls. Trulli and the only Schumacher currently running in F1 Ralf finished the top 9.
Massa’s Ferrari experienced problems in Q2 forcing him out… This will not sit well with people who expected the Brazilian to be Ferrari’s new No. 1.
The most impressive driver for me was the young Lewis Hamlinton. For a rookie to step out and set the fastest lap(at that time) in his very first lap in F1, thats really something… If he can repeat todays performance expect a very good shot at the podium tomorrow.
Kimi and Alonso were the cream of the crop. The were out paced by their respective team mates in Q1 but both proved the mettle when it really counted… Alonso was the fastest in the entire qualification session with an amazing 1m 25.326s lap. The difference in times were almost minuscule at times. Interestingly it seemed that Ferrari were faster in a single lap but the sector times tell a different story… Who is actually faster? We can know that only tomorrow.

Formula 1 Jam: Kimi Alonso Front Row at Australian GP…
F1 Jam said that Raikkonen was overall better than Massa – and that question remains unanswered as Massa was out with a broken gearbox. But he says that it is a perfect start to the 2007 F1 season, with drivers from three different teams in the first 3…
