Apr 19th, 2006 by Haas
If you are a Michael Schumacher or a Fernando Alonso fan or simply a fan of great racing, 2005′s San Marino Grand Prix would hv been special to watch. Michael fighting tooth and nail with the Spaniard for over 12 laps was possibly the best driver to driver fight in 2005.
The Renault Engineers recently reveled that the victory was much tougher than it ever appeared on the screens. We all hv seen the times from friday and saturday… we saw the race on sunday but how many know about the critical meeting Renault F1 teams across the globe had on thursday…
The topic of discussion was Fernando’s engine… the Bahrain Grand Prix winning engine was far more tortured in the Bahrain GP than the team expected. The result was a decision, a moment of truth… Change engines and make sure Alonso can fight after a 10 place grid penalty on a track which is almost impossible to overtake on or Take the battered engine and pull off the impossible.
Fernando Alonso was confident in the ‘all or nothing’ approach adopted by the team at the beginning of the weekend, and told his engine engineer, Rémi Taffin: “Let’s keep quiet for the moment, but if I win on Sunday, it would be nice to explain how we did it!”

The victory turned out to be even more important at the end when Renault finished just 9 pts ahead of Mc Laren in the Constructors Championship.
Now with this new info consider the way Alonso drove those last few laps… After each lap his race engineer counted down to the end of the race… Its amazing how the Spaniard drove knowing he had a fragile engine that could go out any second and a charged up World Champ behind him trying everything under the sun to get past…
