Giancarlo Fisichella led the Dominant Renault’s 1-2 in the Malaysian Grad Prix. This is the first 1-2 in 24 years for a Renault engine and the first ever for Renault as a constructor. Followed closely by the current world champ Fernando Alonso en route to the start of an impressive title defense. Button followed the Renault’s Home about 5 sec behind Alonso and was trailed by the Mc Laren of Montoya a disappointing 40 sec behind the race winner.
Btw, my predictions came out perfectly… This is the second time in a row I have to 2 of the 3 people on podium right, I’m getting good at this ![]()
The dream weekend of Fici continued as he looks to be having the exact opposite of last season(win race 1 and lose out on rest of the season). The race truly belonged to the Renaults as none of their competitors could match them on pace. Alonso set the race’s fastest lap in his engine which had already finished 1 3/4th Grand Prix… Fisi was incredible in his initial onslaught setting 15 consecutive fastest laps(compared to every one on the track). These 15 laps probably won him the race.

Massa impressed in his rise from 22nd to 5th and beat his team mate 7 times world champ to the line. Michael surely has to watch out for his team mate who started 8 spots behind him still managed to get ahead of him.
Kimi lost out on the race crashing out in the first lap after a bump from Klien… The Finn would have looked good for a 3rd place finish but considering Montoya finished 40 sec off the leaders Mc Laren clearly have to rethink their position. Roseberg and Webber were impressive until the engines gave up on them… They both had bad starts gobbled up by Alonso on his way to gaining 4 places in one corner(man I want a copy of that start its probably his best ever).
Alonso’s start dictated his position in the race… starting with a fuel load so heavy that he pitted in lap 26(Fici pitted at lap 17, Button – 19, Montoya and Schumi – 23). He was driving 26 laps with over 10 kgs of fuel more than anybody around him(actually only 3 people pitted after him Massa – 29 and Barrichello – 31). He was lapping in the initial stages 1 sec slower than Button and held back Webber for 14 laps. Starting in the back with such a huge load is not much stress as people around u are lapping around your time but being 3rd is a huge prob as almost 10 people behind you are lapping faster than you… Yep another Champion’s drive from the Alonso.
Fici knew by the end of pit stop 1 that his challenger was only his teammate, the instructions from his race engineer on how Alonso was doing at regular intervals looked really good on tv. Pit stop 2 saw an amazing transition… Alonso pitted 5 laps after Fici and his out lap was 1.8 sec faster than Fici… Alonso was going for the win. The next 2 laps saw him produce an amazing 1.3 sec a lap consistently and slashed the lead from 11 sec to 6 within 3 laps. Then Alonso seemingly just backed off… maybe he was happy with 2nd place and a conselation that the only guy ahead of him was his team mate. The 2 Renaults crossed the line 4.5 sec apart and what followed was a celebration like none other… Both drivers embracing Flavio and jumping in unison as the guys in Blue and yellow huddled for their first ever 1-2 in 24 years.
In the tables Alonso is already building up a lead currently 7 pts to his closest challenger Schumi and Button. Renault have a comfy 13 pt lead. This is all shaping up to be one more exciting season.
Off to Australia then… Kimi will be looking to get back in the hunt and the Ferraris will look to impress by beating the other teams and their teammates to the line. Honda and Williams will be quietly confident of their strength and Renaults will look to make this 1-2 first of many to come. All in all Grand Prix racing has never been so much fun and exciting ![]()

I’m not sure about “This is the first 1-2 in 24 years for a Renault engine”. In the 1994 Portugese GP Williams-Renault finished 1-2. Could be more recent examples.
Yep, ur right… I had gotten it confused thanks for correcting me
More details of the last 1-2 are available in this link:

Actually, I think it is the first one since 1982 for Renault independently. the one in 1994 was in partnership with Williams..
